Heart Rate 101.

As a personal trainer, I have often recieved the foggy-eyed look by clients when I speak about their target heart rate.  Have you ever read through a fitness magazine and wondered what 60-80% of your max heart rate means? Here are your 4 steps to Heart Rate 101…(1) Find your pulse (see pulse sites here). (2) Determine your resting heart rate by taking your pulse before you sit up out of bed in the morning.  Count the number of beats for 10 seconds and multiply the number you get by 6. (3) Use this formula, MHR & HRR (heart rate reserve) , to find your maximum heart rate and plug in your percentages. (5) Monitor your heart rate throughout exercise by using the 10 second-count to see if you are reaching your fitness level. KEEP MOVING!-Elizabeth, CPT.
